Post subject: Question about data center-type environment...

Hi all. I'm really impressed with your application and am seriously considering it for a hotspot model I'm working on. I'd like to pursue local potential location owners and envision using your application in a centralized environment, i.e. perhaps using VPN connections between the locations and the server location via the locations' respective broadband connections (i.e. either cable or DSL). I've looked through the forum and didn't see where this is being done. I'm just curious to find out if this might be a feasible idea. I'd be happy to expand.

Thx much, in advance, for any info you might provide!

Regards,
Kory

Hello Kory,

We have customers already implementing such idea: using a centralized FirstSpot (Adv Ed.) linking through (site-to-site) VPN tunnels to different remote locations.

In this case, you need to turn on the IP-based session handling (instead of MAC-based).

Hope this helps.

Thx much for the excellent info, Karl. I greatly appreciate it.

This might be out of the scope of your forum but could I utilize a centralized DHCP server to cover the IP session handling instead of MAC addressing?

Thx again! :)

FirstSpot has a built-in DHCP server and supports multiple work segments in remote locations. Therefore, it will distribute right addresses to the right segments.

You may also consider getting VPN servers which support "DHCP relay" so that DHCP requests from client machines can pass through the VPN server and reach FirstSpot's DHCP server.
