Hi,
spent all last night trying to set this software up at home but could not get it to work properly. Am I using the right hardware?
Setup:
Netgear - DGM824M (is the adsl modem, Router, and WIFI AP). I have DMZ enabled to go to my email and webserver already installed.
One physical Network card and I used Microsoft Loopback Adapter.
Operating Sys:WIN 2000
Servers already installed on System: IMAIL, PWS
I have a fixed IP address.
I managed to get on to the Configuration Manager and it started. My internet connection dissapeared.
On the client machine (using WIFI card), the log in page did not come up automatically but when I typed in the IP address of the PC on which FirstSpot was installed I got the log in page.
Questions:
1)How do I resolve the internet connectivity problem?
2) How can I get the login page to appear automatically on client PC? |

couple of observations:
1) make sure you turn off PWS (since FirstSpot uses its own Apache web server).
2) make sure the uplink (or WAN link) of your Netgear is NOT used. FirstSpot works with "thin" AP and it should be in bridge mode. Make sure you turn off DHCP in the AP as well.
3) I am a bit confused when you say your "internet connection dissapeared". Since you use Loopback (which is really a test for people without the 2nd network card), you shouldn't have Internet connection. Refer to the chapter on Network Topologies in firstspot_guide.pdf for details.
Your setup should be like:
with 2 network cards:
AP->FirstSpot->Internet
with 1 network card+loopback:
AP->FirstSpot->(Loopback adapter) _________________ ~ Patronsoft Limited ~

I am not quite sure that I have the right harsware since the netgear model I have, the DG824M is:
ADSL Modem, Router, and a Wireless access point in one.
See here:http://www.netgear.com/products/details/DG824M.php
Will that not cause problems?
Thanks,
Georg |

Sorry I didn't aware of your Netgear model in the earlier reply.
Unfortunately, the model (ADSL + WLAN AP) you have will not work with FirstSpot. FirstSpot needs to be placed between the Internet conenction (e.g. ADSL) and WLAN AP.
You need 2 seperate equipments, so the setup will be:
WLAN AP->FirstSpot->router(optional)->ADSL modem _________________ ~ Patronsoft Limited ~ |

Thanks for the quick response.
I actually have a AP that I dont use and I could use my netgear DGM824M as the modem.
In such a configuration I would need a second network card. Right?
Kind regards,
Georg |

Yes, you need a second network card in the PC that installs FirstSpot. _________________ ~ Patronsoft Limited ~ |
