I am currently trying the eval copy of firstspot and am pretty pleased with it so far.
However I am having some odd behaviour with the NAT, I want to disable the NAT completely and have the raw client address be seen by the router connected to the Internet so have set the Firstspot NAT settting to disabled. This initially seems to work fine and the client can access the internet and the router logs the access as coming from the client - however this suddenly seems to change mid session when suddenly all access is seen as from the Firstspot server address ? No changes are made to change this behaviour it just seems to happen after a period of use ?
I have yet to confirm when this changes exactly but I think it is when the message comes up on the client that disconnection is in X minutes etc ? |

This is strange. Maybe the client is being logged out already?
Can you elaborate the step to reproduce the issue? _________________ ~ Patronsoft Limited ~ |

Hi,
I currently have the limit set to 15 mins of access, I hit the auth page with the client and then create a new account on the selfsign portal page etc then log in with this. From that point all access from the client works fine to the web and is seen as the clients address. However towards the end of the session the access to the web still works fine but the access is seen as coming from the source IP of the Firstspot server. I think the behaviour changes as the Disconnect in x banner comes up on the client browser. I have just replicated the problem again - thought I had turned off the disconnect message but it still popped up so must have missed something there. I will try to disable the banner and see if it still happens.
I think it may be the end of the session approaching that causes the change as it alters depending on how long I allow the access limit but always seems to be just before the end of the session. |

The NAT itself isn't related to FirstSpot session control.
Note that after the client is disconnected (logout) from FirstSpot, no further traffic is allowed so it is normal that you don't see any traffic for the client PC in your router's log.
Also, what is the "destination address" coming from the FirstSpot Internet Network Interface IP in your router log? Maybe you have some programs running in your FirstSpot machine? _________________ ~ Patronsoft Limited ~ |

Hi Alan,
Thanks for coming back so quickly,
The change actually happens before the client is disconnected (for about the last few minutes ish) and you can still access the internet from that client at that point.
The access is deffinitely being generated by the client but hidden behind the firstspot server though as at the moment I am sending the traffic through a Firewall (acting as the router) and this is logging IP against URL access so as you request a web page eg bbc.co.uk from the client device (IP 192.168.7.37) the Firewall logs the access request from the Firstspot server ip (10.252.253.145) to that same URL.
Initially the logs are seeing the client ip 192.168.7.37 accessing the net but it then changes to the firstspot server. Whichever urls you request on the client are seen as requested by the Firstspot server as if NAT had just kicked in.
If I then create a new user and replicate the process it happens exactly the same again. |

Can you post your log file firstspot_gw_srv_[timestamp].log file under FirstSpot\log directory? _________________ ~ Patronsoft Limited ~ |

Hi Alan,
Pretty sure that I have worked out when this happens if not exactly the why and what to do aboutt it ..
It looks like it is as the Disconnect in X box comes up.
I tried the whole thing again with the same results but kept a close eye on when exactky it changed to be the Firstspot server address - As soon as the Disconnect warning box came up it swapped to hiding the client address behind the server address and continued to NAT the client as long as the box was on the clients screen. There is an X on the disconnect warning (hadnt noticed that before) and as soon as I closed the warning by hitting the X the Firstspot server stopped Natting the client.
I am not sure on why there is an interaction between the NAT behaviour and the disconnect warning but more importantly I need to somehow disable this behaviour before this will suit the operational requirement that we have.
The setup at the moment has the "Enable Disconnect Reminder" unchecked under the UI customization page but I still get the warning on the client - is there somewhere else that I need to turn this off ?
Or any other ideas on how to stop it hiding the access behind the server even for that short period before it disconnects the client etc ? |

Please go to Configuration Manager -> In-browser Message, select Disabled, and then restart FirstSpot. _________________ ~ Patronsoft Limited ~ |

Hi,
It doesnt look like I can do this ? It seems like the option on the Configuration Manager page just relates to any Operator accounts that are there. At the moment I am just configuring using the default Firstspot admin account which seems to have rights to disable the window by default ? |

Can you just login Configuration Manager using the original firstspot account? _________________ ~ Patronsoft Limited ~ |

Hi Alan,
Yes, at the moment the only account on the unit is the default firstspot admin account. I am using this to make all changes. |

Actually, I mean you go to the In-Browser Message tab (category), not the Configuration Manager tab. _________________ ~ Patronsoft Limited ~ |

Hi Alan,
that seems to have solved it !
The client obviously doesnt get the disconnect warning now which is a shame but the NAT doesnt kick in at all now which is the main thing.
Can you possibly raise the problem with the NAT & Disconnect warning part to see if they can come up with a fix that allows the use of the disconnect warning longer term?
In the short term this is not a show stopper for us so many thanks for your help and I will carry on testing. |
