Post subject: RRAS problems on a Win2k8 SP2 64 bit server

Hello support,

I got problems to start the RRAS services on a Win2k8 SP1 64 bit server running in VMware enviroment.

I have followed all the recommendations regarding the setup of the Intel NIC and also checked dependencies of the RRAS service, it all looks like it is there.

I get the error message:
Mon Mar 18 16:54:40 2013 restartRRAS() : Fail to start Routing and Remote Access service, some of the system components that this service depends on may be not avaliable.

In event viewer i can see the following RRAS errors when starting Firstspot:
Error 1:
Source: RemoteAccess
EventID:20103
Unable to load C:\windows\System32\iprtrmgr.dll

Error 2:
Source: Service Control Manager
EventID 7024
The Routing and Remote Access service terminated with service-specific error A device attached to the system is not functioning..

As there are many changes in Win2k8 R2 SP1 - is Firstspot able to run on Win2k8 R2 SP1?

Yes, the current FirstSpot v7 fully supports Windows 2008 R2 SP1 (64bit).

Please try the followings:

1) Start RRAS manually. Make sure you resolve any error that you might have. Note that you should keep the RRAS service as manual and "not started" before starting FirstSpot.

2) You may need to refine your VMWare network card mapping. One possible setup that can make FirstSpot work okay:

- FirstSpot Visitor Network Interface side, set it so that it is a bridge with physical card that connects to the Wi-Fi network. Note that this IP can be the same subnet or different subnet than the physical card and can be pinged from the physical side.

- FirstSpot Internet Network Interface side, set it so that it is NAT with physical card that connects to the Internet connection side. Note that IP different than the physical card and cannot be pinged from the physical side.

Now I have found a working solution.

I removed the following registry post:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\currentcontrolset\services\remoteaccess\routermanagers\IPV6

Now RRAS starts as it should Smile The scary part is that I do not know why .. Shocked

Best regards / Johan
