FirstSpot currently does not support web URL filtering.
One workaround is to do the URL filtering at the router in the next hop. E.g.
Wireless PC -> AP -> FirstSpot -> Router (do filtering here)
A lot of the low-end router supports URL filtering nowadays. _________________ ~ Patronsoft Limited ~ |

Any other ways to block content? My router will block by domain only, and I'll need to find and enter each domain, one at a time. Even the *dictionary* approach used by end user programs such as NetNanny are over 100K.
A workaround is to *require* an insignificant Paypal transaction, forcing the end user to use a credit card to gain access. In this country, use of a credit card presumes the end user is an adult. |

This may or may not help you, as a matter of personal preference I use Sygate Personal Firewall Pro and I can block all access to and from any IP Based internet address (X.X.X.X).
I can choose whether to block a single IP, small range of IP's or an entire IP Block, etc..
Sygate does an excellent job of protecting against DoS attacks, Trojan Horses etc..., a level of protection that your FirstSpot Server should not go without.
To find the IP addresses of a particular website, DNS server and their mail server IP's you want to block, you can go to the website listed below:
www.dnsreport.com
.... just type the domain name: ex: patronsoft.com and the results will show all the necessary information you need to effectively block their traffic.
It take a little bit of effort on your behalf as nothing is completely automatic, and remember that differnet sites can be shut down by their providers for abusing their policies, so the offenders will use a different ISP, thus a differnet IP address range. |

BTW,
If anyone gets into the wireless access business, there is a level of accountability and liability when it concerns Music, Video and Porn downloads.
Block all the IP Addresses for questionable or illegal services such as KaZaA, Morpheus, etc..
***Blocking domain names alone is not effective since one single IP Address can have many, many domain names associated with it.
For example: the domains, patronsoft.com, patronsoft.net, pornatyourpleasure.com, freemusicdowloads.com, freevideosonthenet.com can point to one IP Address, in effect, one server running all those domains.
Food for thought. |

Definitely. For American operators, the Communications Decency Act, the Digital Millenium Copyright Act, and the Patriot Act all call for being careful about the service you provide, who you grant access to, and how they use the service you are providing.
Content filtering would be a *nice* addition to First Spot. |
