Post subject: Apache restarting several times a day

We have just upgraded to version 4 and the Advanced Edition. We have started having problems with Apache restarting several times a day giving us the error that Apache has encountered a problem and needs to restart. We were having another problem with FirstSpot and had to do a complete uninstall and reinstall of the software. Our Server only runs FirstSpot on a clean Windows XP Professional machine. Is there something we can determine from the Apache Error Log?

1) Did you turn on "SSL-enabled login pages" within FirstSpot?

2) Please zip and email us your log files under FirstSpot\www\Apache\logs for further analysis.

3) In the meantime as a workaround, you can set Apache service to "Auto-restart" after failure. Just go to Properties -> Recovery within the Windows Services console.

1. SSL pages are NOT enabled
2. Logs sent, but we had reinstalled FS so it is only for the last few days
3. We had already put Apache on Automatic for restart.

We are also getting the same message about one time a day for the dispachserver about having a problem and needing to close.

Do you have Opera browser accessing FirstSpot? We suspect you might encounter the below problem:

http://groups.google.com/group/comp.infosystems.www.servers.unix/browse_frm/thread/e1fd62a12d027874/9fa6bf4964fa1ef0?lnk=st&q=Apache+OpenSSL%3A+error%3A1408F10B%3ASSL+routines%3ASSL3_GET_RECORD%3Awrong+version+number&rnum=1&#9fa6bf4964fa1ef0

BTW, what version of old FirstSpot did you upgrade from? What is the current FirstSpot version are you using?

We upgraded from Standard version 3 to Advanced Version 4 and recently to the update of version 4.

We only use IE on the server. We do not have Opera intstalled. It is a pretty clean system with very little software installed.

We are getting this error 30 or 40 times a day now.

What is the exact version of "old" v4? How about the current v4 version?

I actually mean Opera in the client side.

We upgraded to version 4.04 and then to 4.09. We keep having more problems. Now FS is giving an error message that the Public Network Card is disconnected when we try to restart but the card is connected and the server is connected to the internet. We are getting an error message that dispachserver has encountered a problem and needs to shutdown.

With these problems most of our clients are unable to connect. Their computers get stuck on Aquiring IP Address. Due to these ongoing problems we have uninstalled FS Version 4.09 and we are allowing our clients to connect directly to the internet without authorizing. We are awaiting a solution before we attempt to reinstall FS.

On Sunday, Central Standard Time USA, we reinstalled version 4.04 and could not get it to start. When we clicked Start it would act like it was going to start and after about 6 seconds it would go to Stopped. We then uninstalled that version and reinstalled version 4.09. Since that time we have not had the Apache error nor the dispachserver error. We have not restarted FS and we have not rebooted the server since the reinstall. At this point we have not seen any errors. This is about the 4th time to reinstall FS and I don't know that we did anything new or different.

We are preparing to install a proxy server, but we do not want to cause any other errors or problems. FS seems to be a little fragile so when we getting it running properly we do not want to mess it up. Are there any potential problems to run FS with a proxy server? Can they run on the same computer?

Maybe you update your network driver or Windows auto-update? Anyway, we always suggest users to do manual update instead and keep a good log of what you changes so that you can rollback in case there is a problem.

I don't think it is a good idea to run proxy server in the same machine as FirstSpot. Also, please check out http://www.patronsoft.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1083 for more information about proxy server.

Since our reinstall of FS version 4.09 on Sunday we have not had another error message regarding Apache. We have noticed however that the Bandwidth Throttling does not appear to be working. We have configured FS for global throttling at 12 Kbytes download under Dispacher and we are using IP Based Session Handling. With a meter installed by our ISP through the router we have observed individual clients using as much as 45 Kbytes. Could we have a conflict somewhere? Thanks

Please open a new topic as this is not related to Apache.

Please indicate whether you turn use "Use global setting" in your new post.

Alan, we do have the SSL pages enabled and we are also having a problem with Apache crashing ALOT. We are also running Proxy ARP. We noticed a lot of problems when we have ProxyARP enabled. What could the SSL login page do to make Apache crash often? Is it better to not have them encrypted for the Apache problem?

Shadoza, can you open a new topic since your problem maybe different. Also, please zip and email us your log files under FirstSpot\www\Apache\logs and the config.ini file for further analysis.
