We have hotspot up and running. We have been having problems with a number of clients who are unable to obtain an IP address when returning to use our WLAN for a second time. The first time they use it it works fine. When they come back several days later they can not get an IP address. ipconfig /release and /renew do not work. Reseting the user log fixes the immediate problem but this is obiously not a good solution. We have had to manually configure the IP on some clients in order to get them on. My test laptop works fine (2000 pro). We have had problems with XP and OS/X clients.
Thanks,

Can you elaborate a bit more on what you mean by resetting user log? Do you mean the reset button in the user tab of our Configuration Manager? Note that the reset button shouldn't affect DHCP.
Since your 2000 is okay, I am assuming that the FirstSpot DHCP server is still running fine. Do you have some kind of security running at your XP or OS/X client (e.g. 802.1x, WEP, etc...)?
Please post your dhcpservice.ini file (under FirstSpot\dhcp) if you still have difficulty. _________________ ~ Patronsoft Limited ~ |

Actually I think this is two separate issues. The user reset button fixed a problem where a user was getting a message stating something to the effect that they were already logged in. We have only seen this problem once so far. The DHCP problem is reoccuring with 4 incidences yesterday. All of these users were able to get on previously. We did a test with an XP machine this morning. This laptop had been connected to the WLAN once before without any problems. This morning it was unable to get an IP address. We rebooted it and still no address. I let the machine sit while I set up a sniffer. By the time I was ready to capture packets the laptop had magicly aquired an IP address and connected. We are running in anonymous mode. Our typical users are the general public so configurations vary. Here is our dhcpservice.ini as requested

For the reset problem, it will happen if FirstSpot is not shutdown correctly. Pressing the reset button should fix that.
Regarding the DHCP problem, while try not to deny the fact that FirstSpot DHCP Server might have problem, we did encounter problem in the past that if WLAN connection is unstable, there might be problem for the client to obtain the IP. Please help us to diagnose by trying the following:
1) try to use Ethernet instead of WLAN.
2) Or, use the command "ipconfig/release" then "ipconfig/renew" to get the IP. (Sometimes you need to issue the command several times)
In the meantime, we will take a look at our FirstSpot DHCP server. _________________ ~ Patronsoft Limited ~ |
