Post subject: Windows XP Professional Setup

Hello..

I have the following network:

Cisco 801 ISDN Router.
Windows XP Professional.
LinkSys WRTG54G Access Point.

I installed the latest trial version of FirstSpot.
I have enabled Remote Access Routing under XP Professional.
First Network Card 192.168.1.5
Second Network Card has 10.20.7.2 assigned to it.

It would appear that IP Forwading is not functioning as I am unable to see the 10.0.0.0 network from the 192.0.0.0 range and I can not see 10.0.0.0 range from the 192.0.0.0 range. Can someone please help?

Regards

I'm assuming:

10.20.7.2 is the private interface while 192.168.1.5 is the public one?

So what is the problem you have encountered? Can't login? Can't being redirected?

And why would you want to "see" the private network from your public network?

By the way, you don't have to tweak the RRAS or IP Forwarding settings, FirstSpot will take care for you.

>>Sorry small mistake.
10.20.7.1 is private interface IP.
255.255.255.0 is private interface subnet mask.
10.20.7.2 is private default gateway.

10.20.7.2 is Linksys Wireless Access Point.

192.168.1.5 is public interface IP.
255.255.255.0 is public interface subnet mask.
192.168.1.50 is public default gateway.

192.168.1.50 is Cisco Router.

So what is the problem you have encountered? Can't login? Can't being redirected?

http://10.20.7.1:5788 from local Windows XP Server I can get the login.

If I login via remote pda and notebook, I can not login. The pda and notebook has connected via wireless ok.

And why would you want to "see" the private network from your public network?

Your instructions mention to put public IP to see network.
http://public_ip/firstspotdemo
I would imagine that IP forward must be used to forward from 10.20.7.1 to 192.168.1.5??

By the way, you don't have to tweak the RRAS or IP Forwarding settings, FirstSpot will take care for you.

As usual, check these things:

- turn of the DHCP in your access point if it's enabled

- check what IP is assigned to your notebook:
>> is the ip the same network as your FirstSpot priviate network card (10.20.7.x)
>> is the default gateway pointing to FirstSpot?

- if all ip/gateway/dns info look ok, try to see if you can ping 10.20.7.1

Your client looks correct.

It looks like your Windows has some "offending setting". Either you:

1) Install FirstSpot again in a clean windows. Again, I want to emphasize that FirstSpot will take care of the routing, DNS, etc... All you need to do is to make sure the FirstSpot machine can access the Internet. FirstSpot works very well with "default" setting in Windows, it is usually that something got changed in Windows that creates problem with FirstSpot.

2) Or, please post the following in your FirstSpot machine:
ipconfig/all
route print
config.ini file

(Note that this will take some considerable effort and time).

I thought there might be some non-default Windows settings in your windows. It is sometimes just easlier to install FirstSpot in the clean Windows.

Anyway, please pass me the following:

ipconfig/all
route print
config.ini file

BTW, what SP level are you using?

Also, make sure the Routing and Remote Access Service is "stopped" and "manual" before you start FirstSpot.

Also, please describe in a bit more details your exact symtoms. Can you see the login page (after you type a valid domain such as yahoo.com from the client)? Or you can see the login page but cannot surf the Internet? Note that you shouldn't need to type http://10.20.7.1:5788 directly to access the login page.

Yes I can see the login page. I set up a new user. I can not surf the internet.

Sorry, but I need the ipconfig/all & route print for the machine that installs FirstSpot (not the client machine).

Again, please post the config.ini (located under the FirstSpot subdirectory).

I have now reset all the public network card setting and set remote access and routing to manual.

This has corrected the problem, I am now able to surf the internet via the wireless notebook after login...

The help guide needs to be a little easier to follow, this is far too technical for just simple setup.

Maybe have a quick setup guide?

Great to hear that the problem is resolved.

Can you give us some examples on which part of the manual is causing you difficulties? This can certainly help us to improve the documentation in the coming version.

Again, thank you for your feedback.
