No Login Page

Hi,

I read through some similar posts which gave me a few things to check, but still I cannot get the login page to display on a client PC. There is likely more to it than that, as the Firstspot host also has no Internet access when Firstspot is running. I try a ping from either client or host to www.cnn.com and they timeout.

You need an Internet connection to complete the setup as there is no valid DNS.

Nevertheless, you can just test the FirstSpot login page by visiting http://firstspot.org:5788 from the client side. Refer to http://patronsoft.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1088 for more information.

Hi,

We had a problem with the Internet ISP which has been fixed. Now on the host PC, when FirstSpot is not running, I nslookup for google.com resolves and I can ping 8.8.8.8 which is the google DNS we are using. I can also access sites via browser.

Once FirstSpot is running on the host PC, nslookup no longer resolves. The browser does not resovle and sites. I can ping 8.8.8.8 (but I have added that address to my Web Free list. I am not sure if this is normal behaviour for the host or not.

The Client PC still does not bring up a login screen when trying to browse. Also, when manually entereing the login screen as you suggested, it still does not come up. I can ping 8.8.8.8 from the client.

First, try not to change the FirstSpot setting (e.g. 8.8.8.8 in the Exception Free Websites), FirstSpot is designed to have default setting working in most of the case.

FirstSpot has its own DNS server, but it relies on the stability of your external DNS like 8.8.8.8 to work.

Please perform the following:
1) change your Internet Network Interface DNS to 8.8.8.8 ONLY
2) revert your setting change to default FirstSpot value
3) restart FirstSpot

Now, the clients to obtain the new IP again. If you have still difficulties, we still need your output for diagnosis. Please issue the below command and send us the output:

Hi,

I removed 8.8.4.4 from the DNS entry on the Internet side network adapter. That has helped. After doing this I still had Internet access on the host machine....and now the login page appears for a client.

But we are still having issues. The login page comes up with certificate verification warnings....I accept these but not something I would want regular users to encounter.

Once logging in with the sample/password account, I still cannot browse the Internet. No sites will come up...but I can ping the DNS server at 8.8.8.8

If a client has Internet connectivity via Firstspot, would this be shown on the Network icon in the system tray? After login it still says no Internet access.

The certification warning is due to your initial page is https based. Try to http as initial access page like http://www.cnet.com and test again.

I do not understand about switching from https to http on the login page. Does that mean I need to edit the settings on the Firstspot host in the Configuration Manager tool? Manually making the change is the browser is not acceptable for end user logins.

1) Okay, I understand your problem. You need to configure your client to use FirstSpot DNS (i.e. 10.20.7.1). Either you hardcode the DNS in the client side, or you need to make sure you didn't change any setting under Configuration Manager -> DHCP.

Please restart FirstSpot (and renew client IP) if you need to revert any setting.

2) For http initial access page, what I mean is that page that the page you access in order to trigger the "FirstSpot login page". After the client obtains the IP from FirstSpot DHCP server, go to a http page like http://www.cnet.com (and make sure your browser doesn't have "home page" set), you should be able to see the FirstSpot login page without the https warning.

I did not make any changes on the DHCP page of the Configuration Manager.

I dont' want to hard code the DNS on the client as that complicates using the computer anywhere else.

I have removed the default home page in the IE browser and we are not trying to access an https site.

I do not get the login page today. So somehow we have taken a step backwards. The host still has Internet access.

I have noticed that the DNS server for the client is 192.168.1.1 which is my wireless router. Is that the right value...if not, what should it be.

The Internet network connection on the host has 8.8.8.8 for the DNS server.

If you didn't change the client DNS setting, the other explanation is that you have another DHCP server in your visitor network. Please:

1) turn off DHCP server in your wireless router. Make sure there is no other DHCP server (except FirstSpot DHCP server) in your visitor network

2) renew IP in the client side. Make sure the DNS is 10.20.7.1 afterwards.
