Post subject: Auto startup

I'm working with beta #2, and it installs fine (different from beta 1). This one will take a while to evaluate.

I have a Windows 2000 Pro box that can run with an obscure username and password, go directly to a desktop, and from there to a password protected screensaver that will lock out the desktop. Thus, 60 seconds after finishing the boot process at a desktop, the keyboard, mouse, and video are locked.

I have two questions.

I notice that the service as installed (default) requires the administrator explicitly start the service via the configration manager. Can it be started automatically?

If the configuration manager is run with NO username/password defined, and a shortcut is dragged into the Startup folder, will the service start before the screensaver comes on (see above)?

To start FirstSpot v3 automatically (auto-startup is not supported in v2), you can:

1) select the auto-startup during FirstSpot setup

or

2) Make the Windows service "PatronSoft FirstSpot Dispatcher" Startup type "Automatic"

See readme.rtf for more details.

I seem to have some success setting the Patronsoft Firstspot Dispatcher service to Automatic startup. I get an error that a service failed to start, and the event log states that it hangs up, but after I log on it seems to be running and working. Maybe with the automatic logon, you won't run into this issue.

I would like to hear if there is an official way to have this occur, as I hate seeing errors in my event logs.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7022
Date: 11/8/2004
Time: 8:34:38 PM
User: N/A
Computer: PARADISE
Description:
The PatronSoft FirstSpot Dispatcher service hung on starting.

But as I said before, it appears to be running and it works after I log on(or if I wait a little while). I think it may just be a little slow to startup for my computer's taste.

If your event viewer still have issues, zip us all the log files under FirstSpot\log and send it to firstspot@patronsoft.com.

But this maybe caused by other window services.
