Post subject: Test of http://publicip/firstspotdemo?

In using the test from the firstspot_guide.pdf file, I am getting an browser error message when I try to access the http://PublicIP/firstspotdemo. The browsers shows the page as "This page cannot be displayed."

(PublicIP is the ip on the FS Public side NIC.)

My configuration is as such...

Client PC <-- x over cable ---->FS Private NIC

FS Public NIC <------------- > ADSL Line

From the client PC, I can successfully ping the FS Privite IP and the FS Public IP.

From the FS XP Pro computer, I can successfully ping the client IP, the FS Private IP, and the FS Public IP.

Any suggestions?

On the client PC, I can go directly to the webpage at http://10.20.7.1:5788. It seems that something is keeping the client request of the Public_IP page from being re-directed to the portal logon page.

Note that you cannot access http://10.20.7.1:5788 directly, it is not supported.

Is your Windows connect to the Internet via PPPoE? In that case, we suggest you putting a router between Windows and your ADSL modem, like:

Client -> FirstSpot (Windows) -> Router -> ADSL Modem

If you still have difficulties, please post your ipconfig/all dump and config.ini file.

Have you disabled offloading in your Intel card in the FirstSpot machine? Refer to readme.rtf for detailed instruction.

Post subject: you are using two NICs

...so why are you trying to run the demo? Also, turn off DHCP(client and server) and nail up IP addresses on both interfaces on your FirstSpot server -- not just the private interface...it's a SERVER. Just turn off DHCP for the whole solution except FS DHCP for your clients.

Anyway, if you enable ROUTING on your FirstSpot box I bet it will work. Try the following steps first with FirstSpot stopped.

Check the routing table on your server. Make sure both IP interfaces are in it. Then from your client PC you should be able to ping the public side of your server(192.168.1.101). If both interfaces aren't in the routing table my guess is that routing is not enabled -- enable it.

Next, from the client PC try to ping the public side of your router (192.168.1.1). If it doesn't work make sure you have a static route in your router that points to 10.20.7.0/255.255.255.0 through 192.168.1.1

In addition, the IP default gateway on the private interface should be itself (10.20.7.1) -- it needs to know how to get to the other IP networks. Although you may not need this once you enable routing on your server.

Which of the below descripton best describes your symptom:

1) You cannot see the FirstSpot login page at all, or
2) You can see the login page, but after the client PC successfully login it cannot see the demo page

Also, instead of the demo page, can the client PC surf the Internet?

#1 is my issue.

The pdf guide says to enter http://192.168.1.101/firstspotdemo in my broswer on the client machine that is connected to the private NIC via a cross over cable. The browsers shows the page as "This page cannot be displayed."

The screen shot in the guide shows that I should have been redirected ot http://10.20.7.1:5788?{ other information }. I am not redirected to this login page. I am able to place the http://10.20.7.1:5788 in the url and get the page. I realize that this is not supported. I only did this to test to see if I had connectivity to the FS Private IP via http.

I am able to ping the FS public and privite IPs as will as the router IP from the client.

I can, from the client, go to www.google.com. So I thnk routing is not the issue. I think the issue is that something on the FS server is "hindering" the redirect of the url request to transfer the client broswer to the Login page.

As you said, routing is okay. The problem should be in the driver.

Note that we did encounter problem in the past that Intel Network card (i.e. Private Network Interface) has problem disabling Offloading option within Network Properities. Please make sure you disable Offloading in the Windows Registry (as specified in the readme.rtf).

My guess is for some reason, FirstSpot driver is not quite compatable with your Intel card (we did do a lot of testing of Intel card though).

Anyway, please try the following:

1) put a switch between your Intel card and client PC (instead of using crossover cable)

2) if the above suggestion fails, reinstall FirstSpot with your 3com card as the Private Network Interface

I have tried it with a switch instead of the cross over cable. Still same response.

Will look at replacing the Intel card as the private nic.

Its seems to be working now.

Here is what I had to do.

1. Uninstall FS

2. Replaced the Intel card with a 3Com card.(System has two 3COM cards.)

3. Client ->Switch--> FirstSpot (Windows XP) -> Router -> ADSL Modem

4. Re-installed FS...have the newly added NIC be the Private NIC.

Thanks for your assistance. I will stay with 3COM cards when working with FS in the future.
