Post subject: FirstSpot trial

For testing purposes we installed trial version of Firstspot Manager on a PC with Windows XP operating system (with Service Pack 2).The installation went well. The PC has two network card (one is wireless), the wireless network card is connected to a wireless router, the other network card is directly connected to a laptop via a cross cable. The software seems to be working fine until we noticed that user can still surf the net although their account is expired, (their time exceeds the set limit). Once the time limit is up the login page will appear. We did not logged in, we just type the site in the address box of the Internet Explorer and we can continuously surf the net.

The topology is :
Internet --- ADSL Modem --- Wireless Router --- FirstSpot --- Client

Please verify the followings:

1) Have you configured any proxy server on your client's browser?

2) How many network cards does your client machine have? Are they connected to the internet directly?

3) Make sure the web address is not in the exception free websites

4) Clear the cache of your browser and try again.

We have never experienced this kind of problem, please let us know your findings

Thanks for replying.

We no longer had that problem. What we did is remove all what is defined in the Exception free websites (free domain names and free IP address).

Here are the answer to your questions

1. Yes we configured the ISP's proxy server on the clients IE
2. The client machine has one network card and it is not connected directly to the Internet
3. The web address was not in the exception free web sites, the only websites and ip address defined there was the default site and address defined upon installation of the software.
4. We did that.

But we a new have problem, the logout keyword. does not work. If you close the infobox and did logout using it, the user will remain online and will continue to appear on the status tab of the Configuration Manager even after you shutdown the PC. So when you open again your PC and open IE, you will be connected to internet immediately without the login page appearing.

What could probably be wrong? Thanks in advance

Hi

Normally, browser configured with a proxy server won't be able to see the login page because the browser forces all traffic sends toward the proxy server.

We would like to know how you configure your client to make the client sees the login page?

Hi

The login page will apperar once you open the browser. We just put the proxy address and port of address of the ISP in Proxy Server both on the client side side and on the PC with FirstSpot.

Are you using Firstspot DNS and dhcp server?
if you are not using firstspot dns server, you might have problem of using instant keyword and resolving hosts.

please dump your ipconfig/all of your client and tell us more about how you client is setup?

When you got the "unresolved host name page" error, what URL was your browser attempting to redirect? and what url was in the address bar?

We actually want to know the actual URL you see in the address bar after you successfully login FirstSpot. Is it still www.arabnews.com, or it is something else (like your proxy server)?

(Normally, it should be www.arabnews.com. But since you use proxy server in your IE, we suspect this intervenes with the method that we capture the original URL which causes your problem.)

Again, please be more specific. What is the exact symtom?

Also, if the trial period is expired, you won't be able to start FirstSpot at all.
