Post subject: Starting Firstspot disables Public Internet connection

I am running the Firstspot trial version 3.1.4 as a trial before purchase for a small hotel.

I am using a test set up with radio access point-PC-Router. The PC is running windows 2000 Prof sp4 with all latest Microsoft patches.

The radio access point is a Motorola WA840G. The router supplies DNS information from its internal DNS server called Ian, the DNS information is collected from the ISP, all other PC's on the network have Internet access using DHCP from the router, the same as for the Firstspot public NIC.

I have gone through the installation settings. Note I have no options to remove offloading in my D Link DFE 530TX network cards, the d-link web site gives no indication that these cards can offload, and the Registry appears not to have any entry called 'DisableTaskOffload'. (I have seen it on other PC's registry but not the PC used for Firstspot) I have assumed that this option is not available with these D-Link network cards.

Before Firstspot starts I can access the Internet through the public NIC but as soon as Firstspot starts, connection to the Internet is lost and I can no longer ping the router. Turning off Firstspot and restarting the PC gives me access back to the Internet and I can ping the router, until I restart Firstspot.

In addition the Client PC's can connect to the radio network with Firstspot running, but are not redirected to the login page. When connected I can ping from a client, to both network cards on the Firstspot PC, but not the router on the Internet.

At first start up I originally got a network overlap message, so have changed the Private network Interface IP to 172.16.0.1 255.255.0.0 this cleared the error.

All other settings are at default except some information loaded on to the UI customisation page.

The IPconfig info follows together with the Firstspot config ini file. I hope you can help direct me to solve this problem so that I can successfully demonstrate Firstspot to my boss.

Somehow starting FirstSpot changes the routing in your PC, and this causes Internet becomes inaccessible. Note the since Internet is not available so the DNS will fail as well. As a result, the client won't see the login page due to nslookup failure (rather than the Offloading problem).

Please try install FirstSpot in the clean Windows. This solves a lot of potential problems. You can go inside RRAS to try to "fix" the routing issue, but this requires deep understanding on Windows network architecture and it is only recommeded for adventurous user.

Thanks for the quick reply

Unfortunately the PC is 'clean'. Windows 2K was installed just for this trial, the only addition to the install was the windows updates and Firstspot, this PC does not even have a virus checker.

This routing problem must be something being done by Firstspot, I have reinstalled it several times wit the same result?

Yes, it is related FirstSpot as it will change the routing after it is started. Please post the following:

1) ipconfig/all
2) route print (before FirstSpot is started)
2) route print (after FirstSpot is started)

See the information that you requested below, with my comments for each section.

First IPCONFIG /ALL after PC start up Firstspot not started. I can connect to to the Internet, and Ping the router.

Next proof that I can ping the router

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

Now I load Firstspot and start it, then ping the router again, see it does not reply.

The route table again, I notice the only change in the last full line of the table where the public IP address has replaced the private IP address, this must be the problem.

This is still very puzzling. Have you installed SP4 with your Windows 2000?

We need more information. After FirstSpot is started, please copy and post :

1) ipconfig/all
2) arp -a
3) the debug log firstspot_gw_srv_[timestamp].log under FirstSpot\log subdirectory

Post subject: Starting Firstspot disables Public Internet connection

Here is the data you requested, first ping to the router was befor Firstspot was started, second was after it started.

I hope that this helps to solve the problem here.

Note the PC is running SP4 and all the later windows updates, I have also updated IE 5.0 to IE 6 SP1a incase that helped.

Winzip 8, macromedia Flash player 8, Power DVD, Windows Media player 9, and Adobe 7 with photoshop album are the only programs on the PC not instaled by Firstspot.

Post subject: Same Here....

I'm having the same/similar problem with my setup. Having just PURCHASED FirstSpot, this is a little unsettling. Ihad no problems on my test machine (Toshiba 3010 Dual PIII Server) but the production unit (custom built) had nothing but.

Here's my two cents on the problem:

We're both running 2 indentical NIC cards (cheap ones at that) for LAN and WAN. I'm guessing that even though they represent separate connections to the OS, the FirstSpot driver has trouble differenciating one from the other in practice.

I'm going to slap a different NIC in my machine and test the theory.

Keep yout fingers crossed!

Ian, as a workaround, can you add back the route (after you start FirstSpot)? The command should look like:

route add 255.255.255.255 mask 255.255.255.255 172.16.0.1 metric 1 if 0x2000003

Please tell me the test result.

Charles, we did have problem with "similar" network card long time ago. But we haven't had this kind of problem reported recently. Having said that, please still go ahead and test your theory and let me know the result.

Post subject: Starting Firstspot disables Public Internet connection

I have tried the route add command several times but it returns the error bad destination address 255.255.255.255

I have rechecked and the original table entry that we are trying to restore defintely starts with a destination address 255.255.255.255

Change 255.255.255.255 also gives the same error.

I am not sure what to do at this point

Post subject: Starting Firstspot disables Public Internet connection

Is there any way I can find what IP address Firstspot handed to the Access point, because at the moment I cannot check that I have any communication, and I have found that I do not appear able to contact the access point from the PC.

I am just wondering if the PC can not see the access point which I believe will give firstspot problems, and may be connected with the internet connection problem I am seeing.

I originaly set the access point to be a DHCP client which means I now do not know the address to point my browser to, to see its setup info, I have tried pinging addresses 172.16.0.2 to 30 without any reply.

Post subject: Starting Firstspot disables Public Internet connection

Because I could not communicate with the access point I have now set a single excluded address in the Firstspot DHCP 172.16.0.10 and I have given the access point that fixed address.

That now allows me to change the access point settings from the PC while firstspot is running. Can you confirm that this will not upset any Firstspot requirements.

Unfortunately I still cannot connect to the Public network after firstspot starts.

I am wondering if the route table entry 255.255.255.255 255.255.255.255 10.0.0.9 10.0.0.9 is causing the problem as I do not appear to be able to change or delete this entry, it always gives the error bad destination address 255.255.255.255

This does appear to be an illegal address. Note before starting Firstspot this address is different, but still looks like an illegal address.
