Alternative hardware configuration

Hi,

Is it possible than instead of having the hotSpot PC directly connected to the Internet connection (through a modem) one could connect to a router connected to the internet (through a second Lan card). The purpose is to share the same ADSL connection between the hot spot useres and local users without having security problems.
Any alternative that can achieve the same goal is welcome.

Yes, you can do that. The setup will be like:

FirstSpot ----> Router -> ADSL Modem -> Internet
. . . . . . . . . . ^
local users ->

You can configure the router so that Hotspot users won't be able to connect to the local users directly. In the upcoming v4, FirstSpot will have new feature called "IP Block List" that will let you block specifc destination IP address.

So, for example, the hardware I need in my PC with firstSpot instaled will be 2 NIC. One to connect to the Router and another to connect to a switch that will be connected to the AP that holds the hotspot users.

Is this correct?

Yes, that is correct. Note that the local users will be connected to the router also.

Hi,

I tryed the firstSpot demo behind a switch (not a router) and it works, but users from the hot spot can see the LAN machines in the network neighborhood.
I know I have to increase the level of security putting the hot spot connected to directly to the router.

Can aomebody give me a simple example of the router config so hot spot users wont see the lan?

If you connect FirstSpot Public Network Interface to a switch, you need to use "IP Block List" feature in the upcoming v4 block the network traffic to your LAN machine.

Thanks for your answer, but can you be a little more specific?

What device do I use to block the LAN traffic? the firstSpot PC or the router connected to the modem?

I really would appreciate more detailed information because this issue will determine the aquisition of the firsSpot software.

For v3, you need to use the router to block the traffic.

For the upcoming v4, FirstSpot can do the blocking and you don't need configure the router.
