Greetings,

I've just installed the beta2 for a quick eval, but I'm unable to get it to function.

Setup:
I've installed it on a HP Laptop (XP SP2) with both a onboard NIC (public) as well as a PCMCIA 3com nic (private). I have a crossover cable from the 3com to another laptop. My machine did not list "ms loopback" during the setup. I checked and disabled all the offload settings for both NIC's. We have Blackice as the desktop firewall, but it is currently disabled, ICS is not active, and windows firewall is also off.

Questions:
1. The admin tab says "stopped". When I try to manually start it, i do not get an error message and it jumps back to stop. The web page continously clicks at the rate of 1 per second.
Ipconfig shows 10.40.x.x for my onboard nic (my office network) and 10.20.x.x for the 3com.

2. How do I change the private IP address ? 10.20 is used by another office on our network. I tried putting in a 192.x.x.x for the private network, but I cannot get it to switch over.
The other machine either has no connection, or shows a 169.x.x.x address.

What did I do wrong, or where can I look to see what's failing ?

1) Can you post the files error.log and firstspot_gw_srv_[timestamp].log (under FirstSpot\log subdirectory)?

2) You need to set the Private Network Interface IP in FirstSpot Configuration Manager. You cannot set the IP in Windows since FirstSpot will overwrite it during startup.

All I was able to find in the Log dir was the following:

could the problem be that I'm using a laptop with both an internal nic and a PCMCIA nic ?

do I have to have a desktop machine with 2 nic's instead ?

Your laptop should be fine.

Can you setup VNC so that we can look at your machine remotely? Please send the login instruction to firstspot@patronsoft.com.

Post subject: VNC recommendation ?

This machine is currently inside our private network (10.x.x.x) , and since we do not allow the XP Remote Assistance, can you recommend a VNC configuration ?

Ok, I just want to ask to make sure I have everything hooked up correctly.

Laptop with firstspot on it:
Onboard NIC to main network line, gets a 10.x.x.x address & can browse the internet.
PCMCIA NIC to "private" network, hooking to a small bay networks hub.

"guest" laptop, onboard NIC to hub.

Question is, for the main laptop private nic connection, which port on the hub should it be connected to ? the main uplink port ? or just any other port ?

I reviewed the setup guide, and its not clear

Both your main laptop PrivateNIC and guest laptop should connect to the "normal" port (not the uplink). They should belong to the same network segment and that why you can also connect them via a crossover cable.

Your FirstSpot failed very early in the startup process. Since your machine seems to have several low-level things installed, I suggest you try to FirstSpot again in a clean Windows. This will eliminate a lot of issues.

Post subject: rebuilt machine

Thank you for the advice.
It must be a conflict with the way our XP image is built or running.

I reformatted the machine back to a flat XP Home version, then reinstalled the software and was able to get it working.

I will continue my testing next week.

Hi Alan.

Thank you for all your hard work...the previous version of first spot work I can start it up now.

The main problem i was having was that winxp was saying the firstspot driver was invalid.....could you please explain to me the difference between the drivers in each version
