Post subject: Can I ignore only wired portion of our network ?

We have an internal network / ethernet system. We have software for our cafe already for that we wish to run on this.

We wish to use the FirstSpot only for the wireless segment.

Problem / question: our DSL connection is hooked directly into an Actiontec dsl modem/router/gateway. Our setup looks like this:

INTERNET --> ActionTec Modem/router/wireless (all-in-one) --> D-Link 5-port switch --> to our wired (not wireless) internal group/network of pc's and printers.

THEREFORE, since the dsl modem is also our wireless ap and router, it is not easily possible to 'insert' a pc box between the INTERNET and this wireless (ActionTec) modem.

What do you recommend?

Thanks!

Brett

FirstSpot needs to sit between the Internet connection (e.g. ADSL) and WLAN AP. See http://www.patronsoft.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=436#436 for a similar case. So you might need an extra router or AP (depends how you structure it).

We also have this setup. We would rather not purchase another server just for FirstSpot. Is there anyway that we can only direct the FirstSpot service to the AccessPoint with a dedicated IP address?

You can take advantage of the Scenero 3 : Centralized Topologies (refer to the chapter on Network Topology in firstspot_guide.pdf for details). There are 2 alternatives to set up this topologies:

1) You somehow control the route so that the Hotspot traffic will go through FirstSpot first before reaching the Internet. You might need a leased line or dedicated line to achieve this.

2) You set up a VPN-tunnel to a centralized location (which hosts FirstSpot), and then the traffic go out to the Internet. What this setup tries to achieve is to mimic pt 1) without the need of a dedicated line.
