Post subject: Next Version Wish: Progressive throttling

Hi,

I have now been using your software for nearly two years and am very happy of its operation.

Nonetheless the internet is still far from being fast in most places of the world and especially where hotspots in remote locations are developping. In such cases the bandwidth becomes a problem as more users logging and the throttling function would significantly be improved to give better user experience by always giving full bandwidth for the first so many kilobytes of and standard heavy webpage and then reduce the bandwidth if downloads continues if wich case the user is not actually just browsing but downloading.

This would be very useful so that browsing users do not get penalised by the downloading users.

I hope this get heard and may be implemented in the next release.

I like this ideal and would also like to see it. then when the user is done downloading a file, the speed will go back to normal.

Thank you for your feedback. We always like to explore ways to improve FirstSpot.

Regarding your suggestion, isn't that existing Bandwidth Throttling already serve the purpose? Since a normal web site surfing will generally consume less bandwidth compare to a download job, the Bandwidth Throttling will throttle the download job but leave the normal surfing untouched. Also, the algorithm you described, it is a bit hard in the network level to distinguish between a download job and normal web surfing.

It works fairly well, too. Here's how you do it:

Each user has a pre-determined bandwidth limit. That limit can be set many ways, either through purchasing or as a blanket limit. Once they reach their limit they are slowed to the global setting.

Each user should be set to throttled, at the bandwidth limit you desire,
Enable upload/download counters, then "Yes and disable the account ...." when the quota is reached.

Set your global throttle at the level you want them to run at once that's reached. Ours is set to 5 up and 8 down. It's set in the "Dispatcher" area. Believe me, once they hit their limit, they really know they've been throttled. You just need managements backing to enforce it.

The only problem with this scenario is that it doesn't actually shut off users when they hit their limit. That's something we don't care about - we just don't want anyone consuming the entire bandwidth on the network - so maybe this isn't the solution for you. It's a thought, anyway.

Good luck!
