Specific IP address problem....

FirstSpot has worked flawlessly for us, and we recommend it as a hotspot solution to many folks. We did recently run across an issue, though, and wondered if it's happened to anyone else, and if so, is there a fix?

Our machine was using 172.16.1.1/255.255.255.0 as it's internal private NIC, acting as DHCP and it's other normal functions.

For almost two months, no problems at all, then, last Friday, for some reason we can't figure out, it stopped passing traffic. We could still get to patronsoft.com, and the other excepted websites (ours), but that's it. It stopped redirecting traffic to the logon page, and if you manually went to the logon page, it logged you on, and sent you to the correct follow on page, but then refused to allow any other traffic through.

It's running again, as 172.16.1.2/255.255.255.0. This is very confusing, and I'm not sure what the problem might be. Any ideas would be most interesting. We tried everything we could think of, and nothing helped.

It worked fine using 172.16.2.1/255.255.255.0 and 192.168.50.1/255.255.255.0, but since all our access points and switches are already configured as 172.16.1.x, we didn't want to have to reconfigure the entire network to accommodate this flaw.

Maybe there is an IP conflict for 172.16.1.1? I suggest you use Ethereal to sniff the network to find out exactly what's going on...

...but there isn't a conflict. Can't find anything out of the ordinary by sniffing the network. Normal traffic, and no IP conflicts anywhere.

named.exe blows up, too, very confusing, and then the box needs a reboot to get everything running again.

We've got all the logs it creates, so if there's anything you'd need to see, just let me know, and I'll post it.

Make sure you set the Private Network Interface IP within Configuration Manager instead of Windows.

If you still have problem, please post your config.ini file and ipconfig/all output.

BTW, what is the problem if you use 172.16.1.1? You mention the DNS has problem, maybe there is another service that triggers port conflict?

Also, try to stop FirstSpot, and set 172.16.1.1 for the Private IP manually as a test to see whether there is any error.

There's no problem with DNS, never has been.

When we use 172.16.1.1, the system (FirstSpot) refuses to start, except in limited mode, and then won't pass traffic. It won't redirect to the login page, and if you manually go to the login page, you can log in, but won't allow you to surf.

We can manually set the IP in the private NIC to 172.16.1.1. That works fine, and there are no conflict on the network. When we allow FirstSpot to set it, is when the errors occur.

I think we move closer the solution. Note that you need to have a valid Internet connection during FirstSpot startup phase.

I think somehow 172.16.1.1 affect you routing table. Try to:
1) keep 172.16.1.2, issue "route print" and save the result
2) set 172.16.1.1, issue "route print" again and compare the difference.

I do not recommend route add/delete/change as it artificially changes the routing table. You need find out the "root cause" of your problem.
