Post subject: In conjunction with squid proxy?

Can I run a squid proxy on the same machine as Firstspot, or do I have to setup a separate machine?

Any pitfalls I need to be aware of with caching content? We are connecting over a very expensive and congested satellite link, so the more data we can save from downloading, the better.

No. Actually, you should run Squid for Linux which has the transparent proxy mode (which you need to enable it).
