Trying to understand the centrally managed scenario

Your description of the network design seems to say that I will need enough bandwidth at my central data center to route user traffic for all remote APs. Is this correct? We are using mikrotik routers as APs, is it not possible to simply have the FirstSpot authorize a user on the mikrotik hotspot and not route user traffic thru the FirstSpot?

The outgoing traffic needs to go through FirstSpot. The advantage is that FirstSpot works with standard router/AP (instead of proprietary system). FirstSpot really acts as a gateway for the outgoing traffic.

Seems a fairly significant restriction, just want to be sure of the capabilities while comparing possible solutions.

No. FirstSpot only works standard features within a router/AP, and it won't work with proprietary extension in router like Mikrotik.
