Post subject: First Time with Firstspot, cannot start.

Firstspot installed on Windows 2008 Enterprise 32-bit

I am receiving the following error in the configuration manager.

FirstHop driver or some of the following services (rasman, lmhosts, netman) could be missing. Please check your installation. As a last resort, please uninstall and reinstall FirstSpot.

I checked for a .log file as suggested, but could not find one under TEMP directory

Looks like either the driver or RRAS service is missing. Can you double-check?

Please post your firstspot_gw_srv_[timestamp].log under FirstSpot\log directory if you still have difficulties.

I do not see a "RRAS" Service
I see the following services:

Apache2.2 (Started)
Patronsoft Firstspot DHCP Server
Patronsoft Firstspot Dispatcher
Patronsoft Firstspot Receive Mail Service
Patronsoft Firstspot Redirector
Patronsoft Firstspot Send Mail Service

I do not see a firstspot_gw_srv_[timestamp].log under the firstspot\log directory

The only log files in that directory are:

admin_login.log
error.log
install.log

Make sure you need to install Windows RRAS (Routing and Remote Access) service manually? FirstSpot needs this service to function.

Thank you, the RRAS Security is corrupt somehow.

I will revert to a pre "firstspot installation" snapshot and check RRAS Security again.

Update:

In the first installation, I did not accept the signed driver upon install (in Windows XP/Vista/7 Driver Signing ACCEPT is the top choice, in Windows 2008 Enterprise ACCEPT is the bottom choice.

Now:
I have installed FirstSpot, but this time I received the following message:

Installing the Apache2.2 service
The Apache2.2 service is successfully installed.
Testing httpd.conf....
Errors reported here must be corrected before the service can be started.
(OS 10048)Only one usage of each socket address (protocol/network address/po
is normally permitted. : make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:80
no listening sockets available, shutting down
Unable to open logs
Note the errors or messages above, and press the <ESC> key to exit.

I was able to login to the configuration manager, and the FirstSpot Status was STOPPED.

This time, when I tried to start it, it was stuck at STARTING for 20 minutes

When I closed the browser and reopened it, the browser sat blank, and has been blank for the last 20 minutes

This time, when I go to RRAS, it is up and running, but the Security Tab of the RRAS Server Properties states:

The connection request policy used for authentication and accounting configuration is corrupted. Either install NPS and restore the connection request policy manually, or click Repair Settings to restore the connection request policy by using Windows Accounting and Windows Authenticantion.

For the Apache error, it looks like there is a port 80 conflict.

As for the RRAS error, it is really strange since for a "clean" Windows, you should be able to start RRAS manually without any error. Did you use Windows for a while already? While you can try to resolve your issue, sometimes it is just faster to install FirstSpot in a clean Windows (i.e. just Windows 2008 + SP2)

This is a vanilla install with the exception of Security Software, I will try a snapshot pre-security and report my findings.

What security software is that?

Remember, the key is that RRAS needs to start without error when you test start it manually. Note that you should stop RRAS before starting FirstSpot as FirstSpot will start RRAS itself.

I reverted to a snapshot previous to Security Software installation.

I am still receiving the Apache error, but I will report back once install is complete.

RRAS Server install takes up the bulk of installation time.

Thank you

Yes, the FirstSpot Status is now STARTED

It really chaps my ... when security software gets in the way.

I will create a separate snapshot with this image.

Is it safe to install the security software now?

I will keep in mind the Apache error if I run into additional trouble.

Well, I think it is better you get FirstSpot working well first. You might want to play around FirstSpot to experience with FirstSpot features. We can always worry about the security setup later.

That sounds good, I have a gateway set up in front of the server anyway, but you're never too safe!

I will report back today or tomorrow, and use this existing thread for logging.

Thanks again, and QUICK RESPONSE! Very Happy
